In the beginning it was clear that the plan could only work with the participation of the pupils themselves. If the pupils participate in the design of their school and playground, the resulting structures will be more closely tailored to their needs. A high level of coordination is required to involve all students. To concentrate the work in small groups, the class presidents represented the wishes of their peers.

The planning began in a workshop with the chosen groups of pupils. This group separated again into smaller sections in order to intensify the work, which was supervised by the landscape architects and teachers. In this workshop the ideas for the new courtyard were developed. First, existing structures were critiqued, wishes expressed and ideas elaborated. Then, each group developed their own different courtyard models.
