LIFE is the only support programme of the European Union, that provides a financial support for the limited purpose of environmental and nature conservation (6th environmental action programme of the European Union).

Between 1992 and 2006 almost 2.700 projects in 40 countries and regions had been supported by the LIFE – Programme. At this the funds amount to circa 1.6 milliard Euro. The estimated entirely costs of the projects amount to circa 3.6 milliard Euro.

LIFE aims
“to contribute to the development, implementation and updating of Community environment policy and environmental legislation. This financial instrument also seeks to facilitate the integration of the environment into other policies, and achieve sustainable development in the Community.”
